Equipping students for a healthy, safe, and drug-free future

WHO ARE WE?

The East Baton Rouge Parish School System Safe Schools/Healthy Students initiative is a collaboration of community partners working together to create and promote a safe and caring environment in schools and enhance the well-being of students so that they can succeed academically.

The initiative is funded by the U.S. Departments of Education, Justice, and Health and Human Services

WHAT DO WE DO?

For A Safe School Environment

·        Purchase and install security equipment – cameras, metal detectors, portable radios

For Students’ Well-being

·        Enhance alcohol, drug and violence prevention services

·        Provide mental health counseling to students in 25 schools

·        Provide services to students transitioning into the school system from juvenile detention

For Parental Involvement

·        Provide/coordinate parenting workshops for parents of pre-K and Kindergarten students

For Community Partnerships

·        Enhance and maintain community partnerships among the school system, I CARE Advisory Council, Capital Area Human Services District, the City of Baton Rouge/East Baton Rouge Parish Department of Juvenile Services, and the Baton Rouge City Police.

PREVENTION CURRICULA

To support students in the development of social skills, EBRPSS has chosen curricula which will be utilized in all schools.  Second Step will be used in pre-K through 5th grades, and Too Good for Drugs/Violence will be used in 6th – 12th grades.  The grant currently employs five prevention curriculum monitors who assist the schools in implementing the curricula.
